Scholarships


These merit-based scholarships are available to military dependents of active-duty, retired, or deceased military members living in the Monterey County area or military dependents of Naval Postgraduate School alumni living anywhere.

The MBSC scholarships vary in amount. Selection is based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community involvement, work experience (including work inside the home) and essays. A scholarship is also available to a military dependent seeking a degree in one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields.

 Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY

1. Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria and be able to verify with documentation: 

·       Current MBSC member. 

·       Immediate family member of any MBSC member: (Immediate family member is defined as "spouse or child of military member"). 

·       Immediate family member of any active duty, retired or deceased military member in the Monterey Bay area, including NSA Monterey, NPS, POM/DLIFLC, FNMOC, etc. 

·       Dependents of NSA Monterey, NPS, POM, DLFIC, FNMOC, Coast Guard or any alumni from a military post on the Monterey Peninsula      past or current- (including international military students). 

2.  The applicant must intend to pursue a degree or certification at any accredited post-secondary institution on either a full-time or a part- time basis. This includes, but is not limited to: associates, undergraduate, graduate or professional degrees; trades certifications; or continuing professional accreditation. The Board of Directors has final discretion on this issue.

3. Scholarship recipients have until 30 December of that year to provide proof of enrollment, on official school letterhead, and a point of contact in the Financial Aid office, before the scholarship check is issued to the institution. 

4. If a recipient accepts appointment to a service academy, the scholarship will automatically be transferred to a qualified first alternate. If no alternate has been chosen, monies will return to the scholarship fund. 

5. Applicants will be judged based on merit, academic promise, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, work experience (including work inside the home), references, and an essay. Applicants must use the application form provided by MBSC.

6. Applications received after the specified deadline will not be considered. 

Applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, and national origin, rank of sponsor, sex, age, or financial need.


Scholarship Application Requirements:

  • In order to be considered for an award, your completed application package must fulfill all of the following  requirements: 
    • Applicants must meet all of the scholarship eligibility criteria, listed above.
    • Applicants must submit a completed application package. Application packages must include ALL of following:
      • A completed MBSC Scholarship 2021 application.
      • An official copy of the applicant’s most recent high school or college/university transcript. Only originals or certified copies are acceptable (if submitting electronically, they must be scanned copies).  If no transcripts are available, please complete personal statement of academic history.
      • If an applicant is attending a non-credited school, the applicant must provide a GED score.
      • Two letters of recommendation from persons outside your family. Examples of acceptable sources for letters of recommendation include school faculty members, work supervisors, members of volunteer organizations, members of clergy, or members of the community who can attest to your character. If sent electronically, both letters of recommendation must be signed (either electronically, or scanned). All letters must include contact information where the referee can be reached.
      • Applicants must submit the typed application package to the MBSC Scholarship 2021 Committee by April 23, 2021. 
        • Hard copy applications must be postmarked by April 10, 2021.
      • If selected for an award, applicants must provide proof of military dependent status before scholarship monies will be issued to their institution.
    • NOTE: WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ALL APPLICATIONS TO BE SENT ELECTRONICALLY BY EMAIL TO SCHOLARSHIPS@MBOSC.NET. IT IS ONLY IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO SEND YOUR APPLICATION BY EMAIL THAT YOU SHOULD SEND YOUR APPLICATION BY POST.


Instructions For Submitting the Scholarship Application

To be considered for an MBSC Scholarship award, all application packages must include the following components and comply with the stated instructions. Incomplete application packages will not be considered.

  • The application must be typed. Hardcopy application packages, if sent, must be held together with a clip, not stapled.
  • Applications may be submitted as hardcopies or electronically (electronically is highly encouraged). Electronic applications must be provided as ONE pdf document that includes all required documentation.
  • Sign and date the MBSC Scholarship 2021 application (either electronically or scanned). This signature acknowledges that all statements are true and factual, that all work contained is your own, and that you are fully aware of all the rules and requirements of the application.
  • Makes sure that you include all of the requisite supporting documentation:
    • Include your transcripts or your personal statement of academic history.
    • Complete the essay section of the application (located in Section 5 of the MBSC Scholarship Application).
    • Include two (2) letters of recommendation. Letters must be signed (electronically, or scanned) and must include contact information where the referee may be reached. 
  • Email application packets to scholarships@mbosc.net by April 23, 2021.
  • If submitting a hard copy, application packages must be mailed to the address provided.  Hand-delivered applications will NOT be accepted.  Applications should not be folded and must be postmarked by April 10 2021 Mail your completed application package to: MBSC Scholarship 2021, c/o Scholarship Committee, PO Box 8306, Monterey CA 93943.

Scholarship Selection Criteria and Awards

The following criteria will be used in judging application packages and selecting recipients for the 2021 MBSC Scholarship Awards:

  • Academic achievement including transcripts, test scores, etc.
  • Extra-curricular activities or work history (including work inside the home)
  • Community involvement
  • Any additional achievements and/or recognition's
  • Military influence statement
  • Essay
  • Letters of reference


After anonymous judging has taken place, scholarship recipients and non-recipients will be will be notified via e-mail. Scholarship recipients will be required to provide proof of military dependent status.


Scholarship recipients have until December 30, 2021 to provide proof of enrollment and point of contact in the financial aid office before the scholarship monies are issued to the institution.  If a recipient accepts appointment to a service academy, the scholarship will automatically be transferred to a qualified first alternate.  Monies will be disbursed directly to the recipient’s designated institution of higher learning to apply toward tuition, room and board, books, and other fees.
